Author? What?

I was at an event last night where people were doing the usual introductions that almost always end with "What do you do?" This is the classic way to figure out who is in front of you. So much perception of who we are is based on how we make, or don't make, a living. I have had a few careers, so I can cite that litany. I retired from my last career so on the books I am a retired dude in the wind. But almost every day write or try to find ways for people to find my book. So there is that.

Finally, face to face with a woman, a stranger, I got the question. I paused, kind of shook my head, and answered, "I am an author." I am pretty sure that is the best way I have ever had to answer that question.
